I am Kurt, aka Coach Rheaume. I’m a 40 something born and raised on the east side of Metro Detroit.
I am forever blessed to have an amazing, supportive and beautiful wife and mother of our five children. Each of our kids have brought great joy into our lives. Our experience watching them grow and learn is both humbling and invigorating.
Background
I am a middle class IT Manager working in the public sector. I enjoy the work I do and I’m proud of it. I also love coaching youth basketball, including my own kids.
I did play high school basketball and was fortunate to fall in love with the game despite being a “late bloomer” athletically, especially by today’s standards.
Why Coach Hoop?
I created this site to provide regular information, advice, tools and resources for parents that are volunteering to coach basketball because they want to make sure their child’s athletic experience is the best possible.
I don’t pretend to be an expert, just one parent with a little background and experience.
I have over a dozen years of coaching in recreation and competitive teams. All while I’ve teamed with my wife to juggle calendars for our active family. Together, we, have plenty advice for coaches to manage the kids and parents throughout a sports season.
These days many communities and schools have recreational sports programs that depend on parent volunteer coaches. However, often these programs do not have a training program or easy to follow directions to equip these volunteers with all the tools they need to manage any team.
This site provides the tips and tools to help you step up into the coaches role as if your a seasoned veteran coach.
While everyone enjoys winning, I think this quote sums up a coaches role best:
Coaching is about taking players where they can’t take themselves! –Brendan Suhr, Former Assistant Coach for the Detroit Pistons and first USA Dream Team
As a volunteer coach it is important to focus on the basics. You are not expected to win the championships and trophies. You ARE expected to show children how working together is rewarding because they will accomplish together what they can’t do alone.
